Guitar Lessons Myrtle Beach Is Proud to Support Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach
/by Dennis Winge
When I moved to the Myrtle Beach area late last year, one of my priorities was to get to know the community—not just the restaurants, music venues, and beaches, but the people and organizations that quietly work behind the scenes to make this area stronger. One of the most impressive organizations I’ve encountered since arriving on the Grand Strand is Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach. After visiting their facility, meeting their team, and learning about the work they do every day, it became clear that Guitar Lessons Myrtle Beach is proud to support their mission and sponsor their upcoming fundraising gala.
Organizations like Helping Hand represent the very best of what a community can be: neighbors helping neighbors during difficult moments in life. Their impact here in Myrtle Beach is far greater than most people realize, and the work they do touches thousands of families each year.
A Community Organization With More Than 50 Years of Impact
Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach has been serving the community since 1971. The organization began when members of First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach saw a need to help people in crisis—particularly young people who had come to the beach area for seasonal work and found themselves stranded or struggling.
At the time, Helping Hand operated out of a small trailer on the side of the road. Volunteers would offer simple but meaningful assistance: a sandwich, some clothes, a bus ticket home, or a few dollars to help someone get through a tough moment. Over time, that small volunteer effort evolved into one of the most important crisis-support organizations in the Myrtle Beach area.
Today, Helping Hand operates from a facility on Mr. Joe White Avenue, where a small but dedicated staff and a large network of volunteers provide a wide range of essential services. The mission has remained remarkably consistent since the beginning: helping people facing a short-term crisis regain stability and move forward with their lives.
Meeting the Team Behind the Work
During my visit, I had the opportunity to meet two of the people helping lead this effort. Tracy Gardner, Executive
Director of Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach, has been with the organization for several years and has focused heavily on strengthening partnerships throughout the community. Samantha Tate, Operations Manager, oversees many of the day-to-day operations of the food pantry and distribution system.
What struck me immediately when speaking with them was the level of organization and dedication required to run an operation like this. Helping Hand operates with only five paid employees, supported by roughly fifty volunteers who contribute their time throughout the week. Despite the small size of the staff, the scale of the work they accomplish is enormous.
How the Helping Hand Pantry Works
One of the central services Helping Hand provides is its community food pantry. Neighbors who need assistance can register once and then return every thirty days to receive groceries. When they arrive, they are given a grocery cart and allowed to shop the pantry themselves, choosing the items that best fit their needs.
This approach may seem like a small detail, but it makes a meaningful difference. Instead of receiving a pre-packed bag of food, visitors can select items their families will actually use. The process preserves dignity while also ensuring that food is distributed efficiently.
The pantry distributes a wide range of items, including:
• canned vegetables
• pasta and rice
• sauces and shelf-stable meals
• fresh produce
• bread
• meat and deli products
• dairy items
• hygiene products
• diapers and household supplies
Much of the fresh food comes from partnerships with seven local grocery stores, which donate items that are still perfectly good but can no longer be sold. Helping Hand volunteers pick up donations seven days a week from these stores. These partnerships ensure that food that might otherwise go to waste instead helps feed families in need.
An Impressive Network of Partnerships
Helping Hand also works closely with several regional organizations that support its mission. These partnerships allow the organization to access food, supplies, and funding that would otherwise be impossible for a small nonprofit to obtain.
Some of these partnerships include:
• Lowcountry Food Bank, which supplies food to local pantries
• United Way, which collaborates on community initiatives
• USDA supplemental food programs
• local churches and civic groups
• corporate donors and foundations
Through these partnerships, Helping Hand is able to access large quantities of food and resources that expand its ability to serve the community. One particularly interesting partnership is with the new Amazon facility in the area, which provides donations of items that cannot be sold but are still perfectly usable.
These items range from hygiene products and cleaning supplies to office materials and household goods. Everything is sorted and distributed to neighbors who need them.
A Pantry That Serves More Than Just Food
While food assistance is a major part of Helping Hand’s work, it is far from the only service the organization provides. Helping Hand also offers assistance with several types of urgent needs that families may encounter.
These include:
• rent
• utility bills
• prescription co-pays
• transportation
• identification documents
• benefits screening through SC Thrive
The goal is not simply to address immediate problems, but to help people regain long-term stability. Helping Hand
carefully evaluates each situation and often contributes partial assistance that helps families get back on their feet.
For example, if someone falls behind on rent or utilities, Helping Hand may help cover a portion of the cost while the individual contributes the rest. This approach allows limited funds to assist more people while still encouraging long-term financial responsibility.
Supporting Pets and Families Alike
One unique aspect of Helping Hand’s work is its pet pantry. Many families struggling financially also worry about feeding their pets, and the organization recognizes that pets are often an important part of emotional stability during difficult times.
Helping Hand collects and distributes donated pet food so families do not have to choose between feeding themselves and caring for their animals. This small but thoughtful service reflects the organization’s broader understanding of what families actually need.
The organization has also partnered with the Humane Society to host vaccination and microchip clinics for pets in the community. At one recent event, thirty-eight animals were vaccinated and microchipped for free. Programs like this help families keep their pets healthy while strengthening the bond between neighbors and their community.
Understanding Need in the Myrtle Beach Area
One of the most eye-opening parts of my visit was learning more about the economic realities of Horry County. Myrtle Beach is widely known as a vacation destination, with millions of visitors arriving each year to enjoy the beaches, golf courses, restaurants, and entertainment venues that make the Grand Strand famous.
Behind the scenes, however, the local economy tells a more complicated story. According to Helping Hand’s observations from working directly with clients, a large portion of the local population falls into what might be described as a difficult middle ground.
Many residents earn too much to qualify for traditional government assistance programs, yet not quite enough to build financial security. These are the people who keep the tourism economy running: hotel employees, restaurant staff, maintenance workers, service providers, and many others whose work supports the area’s vibrant visitor industry.
Often they are working two or even three jobs just to keep up with rising housing costs, utilities, and everyday expenses. For many families, all it takes is one unexpected setback—a medical bill, a missed paycheck, or a sudden increase in rent—to create a financial crisis.
Helping Hand exists precisely for those moments. In fact, roughly thirty percent of the people who receive services through Helping Hand are currently unhoused. The rest represent that large segment of working residents who simply need temporary support to regain stability.
Seeing the numbers and hearing these stories firsthand made it clear that the need for organizations like Helping Hand is both real and significant.
The Numbers Tell the Story
Statistics alone cannot fully capture the human side of Helping Hand’s work. They cannot tell the individual stories behind each visit to the pantry or the relief families feel when they realize they will make it through another month. Still, the numbers do provide a powerful glimpse into the scale of the organization’s impact.
In 2025 alone, Helping Hand assisted:
• 10,919 households
• 22,959 total individuals
• 5,812 children
During the same year, the organization distributed more than:
• 629,000 pounds of food
• 7,800 pounds of hygiene products and diapers
• 7,500 pounds of pet food
Helping Hand also provided assistance with rent, utilities, transportation, and prescriptions to hundreds of families throughout the Myrtle Beach area. Each of these numbers represents neighbors who received help during a difficult moment in their lives.
Supporting the Helping Hand Gala
One of the ways Helping Hand raises funds each year is through its annual Helping Hand Gala, held at the beautiful Dunes Golf and Beach Club. The event brings together community members, local businesses, and supporters who believe in the organization’s mission.
The gala is both a celebration of the work Helping Hand has accomplished and an opportunity to ensure that work can continue in the year ahead. Funds raised during the event help support food distribution, emergency assistance programs, and many of the services that families rely on throughout the year.
This year will mark the fourth annual gala hosted by the organization. Attendance has grown steadily as more people throughout the Myrtle Beach area learn about the impact Helping Hand is making in the community.
Guitar Lessons Myrtle Beach is proud to participate as a sponsor of this event. Supporting the gala is a meaningful way to contribute to the work Helping Hand is doing for thousands of families across the Grand Strand.
Looking Ahead
One of the most inspiring parts of my visit was hearing about how Helping Hand continues to grow and adapt as the needs of the community evolve. The organization is constantly forming new partnerships, applying for grants, and expanding services.
In recent years, the demand for assistance has increased significantly. Rising housing costs, inflation, and seasonal employment patterns have made financial stability more difficult for many families in the Myrtle Beach area.
Despite these challenges, the commitment of Helping Hand’s staff and volunteers remains unwavering. Their work demonstrates what a community can accomplish when people choose to support one another.

If you’re looking for ways to support your community, Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach offers several opportunities.

A Community Worth Supporting
One of the most rewarding aspects of starting Guitar Lessons Myrtle Beach has been discovering the incredible network of people and organizations working to strengthen this community.
Myrtle Beach is known for its beaches and tourism industry, but behind that public image is a deep spirit of generosity and cooperation. Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach represents that spirit in action.
For more than fifty years, the organization has quietly helped thousands of families regain stability during difficult moments in life. The staff, volunteers, donors, and partners who support Helping Hand have created something truly meaningful for the community.
