How to Improve Your Swing Feel
/by Dennis WingeSwing feel is one of the defining characteristics of jazz, yet it can be surprisingly difficult to teach. Most guitarists are introduced to swing through a simple explanation: divide each beat into a triplet and play the first and third parts. That explanation is useful, but it can also create a problem. A guitarist can play perfectly accurate triplet-based eighth notes and still not swing very convincingly.
That is because swing is not one thing. It involves pulse, subdivision, accents, articulation, phrase placement, dynamics, interaction with the rhythm section, and even the way a phrase moves toward or away from certain parts of the measure. The familiar triplet model gives us a place to begin, but it is only the beginning.
Over the years, I have become increasingly interested in how all these elements work together. Through teaching, listening, practicing, studying rhythm, and experimenting with my own playing, I have found that students often improve more quickly when swing is taught as a progression of sensations rather than as a single rhythmic formula.
This article presents the approach I now use.
Step 1: Feel the Quarter-Note Pulse
Before worrying about swung eighth notes, start with the quarter note.
The quarter-note pulse is the foundation underneath the eighth notes, triplets, syncopations, and phrases that occur above it. Peter Erskine emphasizes this idea in his discussion of swing: the quarter note defines the underlying pulse, while the melodic rhythms exist on top of that foundation.
Put on a recording that swings and simply tap your foot on all four beats. Better yet, sway, walk, or move your body with the music. Then try clapping on beats 2 and 4 while your foot continues keeping the quarter notes.
Do not rush this stage. If the quarter-note pulse feels stiff, anxious, or disconnected from the recording, adding swung eighth notes will usually make the problem more complicated rather than solving it.
One of the misconceptions guitarists sometimes develop is that rhythm belongs primarily to the drummer. In a strong jazz ensemble, everyone is responsible for time. The musicians have to share an underlying rhythmic awareness so that the group begins functioning almost like one instrument.
For a guitarist, that means the pulse should not merely be something you intellectually know is occurring underneath your notes. You should feel it physically.
Step 2: Learn the Basic Triplet Model
Once the quarter-note pulse feels comfortable, divide each beat into three equal parts:
1-trip-let
2-trip-let
3-trip-let
4-trip-let
Then play only the first and third partials:
1 — let
2 — let
3 — let
4 — let
This creates the familiar long-short relationship associated with swing eighth notes.
For beginners, this is still one of the best ways to begin developing a swing feel. Traditional swing eighth notes are closely related to triplet subdivision, and thinking of the second eighth note as occurring near the final triplet partial gives students something concrete to hear and practice.
But there is an important qualification.
Do not mistake the exercise for a universal definition of swing.
Actual jazz musicians do not always divide the beat into an exact 2:1 ratio. Swing ratios vary according to tempo, style, player, articulation, and musical context. The triplet model is therefore best understood as a training grid. It gives us a reference point from which we can eventually develop something more flexible.
Step 3: Get Rid of the “Hokey Triplet” Sound
A student who has just learned the triplet model will often play something like:
DAH-da DAH-da DAH-da DAH-da
Technically, the notes may be in approximately the right places. Musically, however, the result can sound exaggerated, stiff, or almost cartoonishly “jazzy.”
This is where I begin asking students to relax the feel.
Instead of trying to nail every swung eighth note to an imaginary triplet grid, allow the phrase to sit more comfortably in the time. Listen to players whose swing feels relaxed and notice that the music does not sound like someone mechanically reciting a subdivision exercise.
This distinction matters because swing is more than mathematical proportion. Erskine describes swing in terms such as momentum, relaxation, bounce, ease, and forward motion without tension. Simply producing the correct long-short ratio does not automatically create those qualities.
This is also one reason drum-machine swing can sometimes sound unconvincing. The machine may reproduce a precise ratio, yet the musical hierarchy within the phrase may remain completely flat.
Human swing contains shape.
Step 4: Make the Offbeats Important
This has become one of the most important parts of the way I teach swing.
Take one pitch and play eight consecutive swung eighth notes beginning on beat 1. Do not worry about scales, chord changes, or vocabulary yet. Just listen to the rhythm.
You might play:
1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
If every note has approximately the same weight, and the phrase begins and ends squarely on strong parts of the measure, it may swing somewhat because of the subdivision. But it often still sounds surprisingly ordinary.
Now try beginning the same kind of phrase on the “&” of beat 1 and ending on an offbeat.
Suddenly the entire rhythmic sensation changes.
The notes themselves have not become more sophisticated. You have not introduced a new scale, chord substitution, or bebop lick. The major change is where the phrase sits in relation to the beat.
This illustrates one of the most important lessons about jazz phrasing: swing does not come only from how individual eighth notes are divided. It also comes from where rhythmic weight falls.
Offbeat accents contribute strongly to the buoyancy and propulsion associated with swing. In Erskine’s discussion of swing and accents, slight offbeat emphasis is described as one way of generating forward motion while preserving relaxation.
Try this exercise systematically.
Play eight eighth notes beginning and ending around beat 1. Then repeat the idea beginning on the “&” of 1. Continue through the measure:

& of 4
Listen carefully to the emotional and rhythmic difference produced by each starting point.
Then experiment with combinations. Start on a downbeat and end on an offbeat. Start on an offbeat and resolve to a downbeat. Start and end on offbeats.
The purpose is not to conclude that downbeats are bad. They are essential.
The goal is to hear what happens when everything gravitates toward them.
Too much downbeat emphasis can make even technically correct swing feel square. Offbeats give the rhythm another center of gravity.
Step 5: Think About Where a Phrase Begins and Ends
The previous exercise leads to a broader concept: phrase placement.
Many guitarists practice scales beginning on beat 1, ascending for a certain number of notes, and ending neatly on another strong beat. There is nothing inherently wrong with this. Unfortunately, if most of your musical ideas behave that way, your improvisation can begin sounding like an exercise book.
Jazz phrases frequently begin before strong beats, after strong beats, or on weak subdivisions. They may cross bar lines and resolve later than expected.
Try improvising for several minutes with one simple restriction:
Every phrase must begin on an “&.”
Do not worry about whether the notes themselves are brilliant. Your job is simply to experience what offbeat phrase entrances feel like.
Then reverse the exercise.
Start every phrase on a downbeat but require it to finish on an offbeat.
Then try:
offbeat → offbeat
offbeat → downbeat
downbeat → offbeat
downbeat → downbeat
Do not decide that one category is universally superior. Listen to the sensation each one creates.
Eventually the point is freedom. You want to be able to invoke any of those rhythmic sensations when the music suggests them.
Step 6: Learn Forward Motion
Swing is often described as having forward motion, but that phrase can be vague until you begin experimenting with it.
One way to hear forward motion is to compare phrases that continually land with equal emphasis on the beat against phrases whose accents seem to lead somewhere. Hal Galper has written extensively about the importance of forward motion, and one practical approach is to organize accents so that smaller events lead toward larger rhythmic destinations rather than making every beat feel like a separate arrival.
You can experiment with this using only eighth notes.
Play a line and strongly accent every downbeat:
ONE & TWO & THREE & FOUR &
Notice how vertical that can feel. Each beat becomes its own event.
Now place more weight on selected offbeats and allow subsequent notes to flow toward a later destination. The line may begin feeling less like four separate beats and more like one continuous phrase.
This is one reason swing can be thought of as horizontal motion through time rather than merely a sequence of correctly placed notes. Erskine similarly describes swinging music as possessing continuous energy and forward momentum rooted in shared subdivision awareness.
Step 7: Change the Articulation Without Changing the Rhythm
Once students begin hearing the effect of phrase placement and accents, I introduce articulation.
Take a short phrase and keep the pitches and rhythm exactly the same. Play it several different ways.
First, articulate every note evenly.
Then make selected offbeats slightly stronger.
Then shorten certain notes.
Then connect others.
Then change the pick attack.
Then allow occasional notes to become almost ghosted.
The rhythm written on the page has not changed, yet the feel can change dramatically.
This is one reason two musicians can play what appears to be the same transcription and sound completely different. Every note carries information beyond its starting point. Attack, duration, dynamics, articulation, timbre, and accent all contribute to the listener’s experience of rhythm.
My own investigations into swing have increasingly convinced me that these variables are much more important than many traditional rhythm explanations suggest. Accent placement can alter how listeners organize a rhythmic phrase, while articulation and attack can influence whether a note feels urgent, relaxed, heavy, light, early, or late even when its actual placement changes very little.
This is also why learning jazz articulation directly from recordings is so important.
Notation rarely tells the whole story.
Step 8: Learn Swing From Recordings
At some point, explanations have to give way to listening.
Swing is a musical language. You cannot completely learn its pronunciation from written descriptions any more than you could learn the sound of a spoken language entirely from a textbook.
Erskine emphasizes extensive listening and immersion as essential parts of developing swing. Repeated exposure teaches the rhythmic equivalent of vocabulary, pronunciation, and accent.
Choose a recording whose feel you love and loop a very short section. Five to twenty seconds is enough.
Do not immediately pick up the guitar.
First, tap the quarter-note pulse.
Then sway with it.
Then clap 2 and 4.
Then listen specifically for the offbeats.
Try clapping the offbeats while continuing to feel the quarter notes internally.
Sing along with a phrase.
Only after the groove feels physical should you transfer it to the instrument.
Begin with one note. Try to make that one repeated pitch live inside the recording.
Then use a scale.
Then improvise simple phrases.
Only later should you worry about copying the actual notes of the solo.
This resembles what Kieren Brereton describes in his “Pocket Method”: first absorb the pulse and offbeat placement physically from a recording, then transfer that feeling to increasingly complex musical material. Eventually, the goal is to reproduce the sensation without needing the original recording.
This approach is extremely powerful because it reverses the usual practice hierarchy.
Instead of learning difficult notes first and hoping they eventually groove, you establish the groove first and allow the notes to enter afterward.
Step 9: Use a Metronome to Generate Feel, Not Just Measure Time
Once you can absorb a feel from a recording, try generating it yourself with a metronome.
The conventional exercise is to place the metronome on beats 2 and 4. That is still useful.
But do not stop there.
Try the click on:
1 and 3
2 and 4
beat 4 only
one beat per measure
one beat every two measures
As the click becomes less frequent, you are forced to generate more of the rhythmic environment yourself.
The objective is not merely to prove that you can stay synchronized with a machine.
A much more interesting goal is to make the machine sound as though it grooves.
If a metronome click suddenly begins feeling like it belongs inside the jazz recording you were studying, something important has happened. You are no longer relying on the recording to supply the groove. You are generating the rhythmic framework internally.
Sparse-click metronome exercises are particularly useful for this because they reveal whether you are maintaining your own subdivision between reference points.
Step 10: Understand That Swing Ratio Changes
After students have developed some basic feel, it becomes useful to revisit the original triplet explanation.
Remember the 2:1 ratio?
It turns out that real swing is much more flexible.
Research into jazz performance has shown that swing ratios can change substantially with tempo. Slower tempos may contain considerably more uneven eighth notes, while faster tempos often become progressively straighter. The familiar triplet relationship occurs somewhere within that larger continuum rather than defining the entire system.
There can also be differences between members of the same ensemble. A drummer and soloist may divide the beat somewhat differently while still sounding completely connected.
This leads to a useful philosophical shift.
Instead of asking:
“What is the correct swing ratio?”
ask:
“What rhythmic relationship produces the sound I am hearing?”
That question encourages listening rather than formula following.
My own recent experiments have also led me to investigate another possibility: sometimes what we perceive as push or layback may involve not only literal note placement but also accents, articulation, and which subdivision is carrying the greatest rhythmic weight. Research into delayed downbeats, offbeat synchronization, and swing ratios suggests that the interaction may be much more complex than simply “playing early” or “playing late.”
For developing players, however, you do not need to calculate any of this.
Listen.
Imitate.
Record yourself.
Adjust.
The science can help us understand the phenomenon, but the ears ultimately have to make the decision.
Applying Swing to Comping
The same ideas apply to chordal playing.
Many guitarists initially comp almost entirely on downbeats. A useful way to loosen this up is to experiment with anticipations and delays over a simple progression such as:

First, anticipate the next chord by an eighth note and change chords on the “&” of 4.
Then anticipate by a quarter note and change on beat 4.
Next, experiment with delayed attacks by placing the new chord on the “&” of 1 or beat 2.
Mix all of these possibilities with ordinary on-beat changes.
The purpose is not to create a new rule requiring every chord to be anticipated or delayed. The goal is to experience how moving an attack to a different part of the measure affects rhythmic momentum.
You can also practice approximately balancing on-beat and offbeat chord attacks. Again, do not turn this into mathematics during an actual performance. Use it as an exercise to prevent the guitar from automatically falling onto every strong beat.
The Freddie Green Approach
Freddie Green provides another valuable model because his playing demonstrates how deeply a simple quarter-note pulse can swing.
Try playing four quarter-note chords per measure while allowing some strokes to become lighter, shorter, or more percussive. Listen to how the internal triplet subdivision influences the motion even though you are not continuously playing eighth notes.
This reinforces an important principle.
Swing is not contained inside the eighth notes.
A quarter note can swing.
A rest can swing.
A single chord can swing.
An entire phrase can swing even if it contains very few notes.
What matters is how every event relates to the underlying pulse, subdivision, articulation, and surrounding musical environment.
Rests Have to Swing Too
Students often concentrate so hard on note placement that they forget about silence.
But rests occupy time just as notes do.
If a rest is shortened because you are eager to reach the next note, the phrase will rush. If the silence is given its full rhythmic value, the following note can arrive with much more authority.
Erskine specifically points out that ensembles often rush by shortening rests and clipping note durations. He also emphasizes how important the first note of a phrase can be in establishing momentum.
This is another reason that leaving space can improve swing.
You are not merely playing fewer notes.
You are allowing the rhythmic shape of the phrase to become audible.
The Most Important Exercise: Play With Great Musicians
Metronomes are valuable.
Backing tracks are valuable.
Drum machines are valuable.
But nothing replaces playing with musicians who already have good time and feel.
Pat Metheny has emphasized that time and feel are among the most important qualities a musician can develop and that one of the best ways to improve is to play with musicians—especially drummers—whose time already feels great.
When you play with a strong rhythm section, listen more than you normally do.
Do not simply place your notes over the drummer.
Notice the ride cymbal.
Notice the bass quarter notes.
Notice where the drummer’s skip note falls.
Notice how your offbeats relate to theirs.
Notice whether your phrases feel connected to the ensemble or merely superimposed upon it.
Swing is ultimately a collective phenomenon.
A Simple Swing Practice Routine
If you want a practical routine, try this progression.
Spend a few minutes moving physically with a swinging recording while tapping quarter notes.
Then clap 2 and 4.
Next, sing the triplet subdivision.
Play first-and-third-triplet eighth notes on one pitch.
Relax those eighth notes until they stop sounding mechanically triplet-based.
Experiment with offbeat accents.
Begin phrases on different parts of the measure.
End phrases on different parts of the measure.
Change articulation without changing the notes.
Play along with a short recording loop.
Remove the recording and recreate the same feeling with a metronome.
Finally, improvise over a tune while forgetting the exercises completely.
That final step is essential.
The purpose of all this analytical practice is not to make you think constantly about rhythm while performing. The goal is to build enough rhythmic awareness that these possibilities become available spontaneously.
Swing Is a Sensation, Not a Formula
The biggest mistake we can make is reducing swing to one recipe.
“Play the first and third triplets” is useful.
“Accent the offbeats” is useful.
“Play behind the beat” can be useful.
“Put the metronome on 2 and 4” is useful.
None of them, by itself, creates swing.
Swing emerges from an entire network of relationships: the quarter-note pulse, subdivision, accents, phrase shape, articulation, dynamics, note duration, interaction, listening, and cultural familiarity with the language. One contemporary description of swing calls it an “ecosystem,” which is a useful way to think about why isolated mechanical solutions so often disappoint students.
The good news is that you do not need to master all of these things simultaneously.
Start with the pulse.
Learn the subdivision.
Make the offbeats meaningful.
Experiment with where phrases begin and end.
Listen deeply.
Play with musicians who swing.
And pay attention to how the music feels rather than merely whether your notes are technically correct.
Eventually, the goal is no longer to “apply swing” to your playing.
You hear the sound, feel the pulse, and the phrase simply comes out that way.
