Mixing Minor and Major Pentatonics

Creating Your Own Licks

Exercise to Further Create Your Own Licks by Playing the Minor Pentatonics with either the 2, 3, or 6

1. select a key and
2. pick a CAGED shape
3. play min pent
4. play min pent + all 2s as in 1 2 b3 4 5 b7
5. solo* in this key / shape, highlighting the 2s
6. play min pent + all 3s as in 1 b3 3 4 5 b7
7. solo* in this key / shape, highlighting the 3s
8. play min pent + all 6s as in 1 b3 4 5 6 b7
9. solo* in this key / shape, highlighting the 6s
10. repeat steps 2 to 9 four more times in the other shapes of the key

*optionally you can use a loop or backing track of a 7th chord of the key you’re in.  For example, go to Youtube and type in “B7 backing track” if your key is B.
